AEGIS Notations for Icarus Authorized Personnel Only Haris Collins was born in Wales to an executive father named Arthur Collins and a school teacher mother named Renata Collins. His early life was relatively normal. As a boy, he moved with his family to various locations around Great Britain, and eventually found himself in Toronto, Canada. Moving often made it hard for Haris to make friends, but he always found good friends in books, which he read voraciously and eventually grew into an author, writing for magazines and various publications that accepted mail in submissions. Haris was sent to some of the finer schools and when he attended Oxford, he excelled in writing and literature. He received his degree a year early and began his post-graduate work with little delay, completing his doctorate in literature within just over two years, an astounding accomplishment, but for Haris, it was still unfulfilling. He accepted a post in New York but quickly grew tired of it. He became enamored of the arts and culture in Soho and Greenwich Village, and such was where he met his girlfriend, Maria Almarez. He and Maria enjoyed a short but exciting affair and in mere weeks, Haris proposed to her. Maria asked him to go to Venezuela with her to meet her parents, which he agreed to eagerly. The surprise he got when she took her to her parents home was completely unexpected -- two men with guns abducted him. Haris quickly surmised from his conversation that he was targeted because of his money and position -- and that he was being delivered by a group called the Sanguo Brotherhood to someone called the Matar Sanguo, aka the Killing Blood. Once in his mountain facility, Haris was subjected to a number of tortures and cruelties, each with a specific medical outcome and intention. After going through extensive mental conditioning, Haris was subjected to Q-tech experimentation, where Matar Sanguo sought to imbue in him Quasar powers, as he had done others. Haris eventually gained powers, just as Killblood had intended, but he was rescued by mercenaries hired by his parents, who realized he was missing. In a daring raid, a mercenary group known as the Akili Moja, who had snuck into the facility where he was being held and rescued him. When he got home, it took months of therapy and reconditioning to clear his mind. He wrote almost nonstop in these months, his imagination purging his mind of harrowing nightmares, some imaginary and some real, that took root during his captivity. Eventually, the stories came to be published as the "September Falls" series. The novels were immediate successes and Haris became a celebrity almost overnight, both because of his writing and because his Quasar nature had been revealed by reporters trying to dig up a story on this new superstar author. Haris still had no identity for his Quasar and overtly refused to use his abilities for fear of awakening the old nightmares planted by Killblood. His desire to remain outside of the world of Quasars and the violence inherent in the use of his powers kept him as just a celebrity for months, writing and Haris went through a period of celebrity and was given exempt status by AEGIS. He would have gone on being a celebrity had it not been for the 2022 Q-Games attack. Haris was not at the event but he knew people who both died and survived the attack. He made a decision that for whatever reason he had been given his powers, he had a moral obligation to use them to aid others, no matter what his personal stance on physical violence may be, he needed to give back to the world. Haris discussed it with his father, who put in him contact with Dr. Anson of the Daedalus Foundation. Dr. Anson deferred, instead referring Haris to Dr. Xavier Brooks, a fellow on the US West Coast who was preparing an enterprise involving Quasars. After a short discussion and some evaluation, Dr. Brooks took on Haris, and they came up with the moniker Slipstream. With the aid of Mindario, a retired psychic hero, Dr. Brooks helped Haris purge all of the demons and conditioning hidden in his mind by Killblood and it enabled him to unlock his powers to a greater potential, removing the blocks that kept his power restricted at just Beta level powers to realizing their full Omega level potential. After that, Slipstream began his training to become a Quasar hero and began his quest to finding a way to not just helping people escape reality, but to making their realities better. |
